Background and Description
The Washington State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) is a federal/state
program that was first implemented in the State of Washington in February 1, 2000.
The SCHIP program provides health care coverage for children under age 19 in families
between 200-250% of the Federal Poverty Level who do not qualify for Medicaid coverage.
The SCHIP program is administered by the Medical Assistance Administration (MAA)
in partnership with the federal government under Title XXI of the Social Security
Act.
Most SCHIP clients share in the cost through a premium payment to the State. Clients
who are American Indian (AI) or Alaska Native (AN) are not required to pay premiums.
SCHIP clients have the same benefits as Healthy Options. CUP contracts with MAA
to administer the SCHIP program for members in CUP’s service area. CUP’s SCHIP members
receive CUP’s ID card and the monthly medical ID card from MAA.
