Clinical Practice Guidelines
Clinical Practice Guidelines are an integral part of Columbia United Providers (CUP)
programs to manage chronic and high-risk conditions. Practice guidelines have been
shown to reduce undesirable variation in the process and outcome of care. All CUP
guidelines are evidence-based and adopted from recognized, authoritative professional
medical associations. These guidelines are designed to assist the clinician in the
management of specific conditions and are not intended to replace a clinician's
judgment or establish a protocol for all patients.
CUP has a systematic process for developing and implementing clinical practice guidelines,
disseminating the guidelines to practitioners, evaluating guideline compliance and
effectiveness, and regularly reviewing and revising the guidelines. If you have
questions or comments about these guidelines, or if you would like to receive a
copy of any CUP Clinical Practice Guideline, please contact Sharon Brooks at (360)

Preventive Guidelines
Providing primary prevention services can reduce the incidence of illness, disease,
and accidents. Early detection of potentially serious illnesses may also reduce
the impact of the illness on the member and improve care outcomes.
Columbia United Providers has a systematic process for the initial development of
Preventive Health Guidelines and the distribution of the Guidelines to all Network
Practitioners. Practitioners are encouraged to use the Guidelines in the promotion
of health for our members.
